By Stacy McNeal, PhD, LMFT, Clinical Director of Highlands in Bloom
At Highlands in Bloom (HiB), client care and professional growth go hand in hand. We recently became an approved traineeship site for masters-level therapy students, allowing us to support clients while preparing future clinicians.
Why Supervised Clinical Training Matters
Every licensed marriage and family therapist must complete 3,000 supervised clinical hours. These hours mirror the training process of doctors. Only qualified supervisors can oversee this journey. As Clinical Director, I guide this work with my background in trauma and somatic therapy, ongoing research, and advanced certifications.
Becoming an Approved Traineeship Site
Approval required more than paperwork. I completed the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists’ Certified Supervisor Program, including coursework and a year of consultation with a senior supervisor. This mentor also guided me as a graduate student, creating a cycle of learning that now continues at Highlands in Bloom.
Partnering with the University
I collaborated with my alma mater to design the program. The university team reviewed our site to ensure safety and professionalism. After approval, I interviewed students and selected those who matched our values and client needs.
Aligning Interns with Somatic Studies
Many of our interns focus on somatic studies. This fits seamlessly with our trauma-informed, body-based model of care. Under my supervision, interns provide individual sessions, co-facilitate groups, and practice evidence-based trauma care. They also receive mentorship and case consultation that bridges classroom theory with clinical experience.
How Clients Benefit
Interns do not replace licensed clinicians. Instead, they add fresh perspectives, creativity, and energy. Clients work with a full team, licensed staff, myself, and carefully chosen interns. This layered model enriches treatment and ensures high-quality, trauma-informed support.
Our Commitment to Growth
Teaching future therapists is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. I see their confidence grow as they serve clients with skill and compassion. At Highlands in Bloom, we remain committed to trauma-informed care while preparing the next generation of therapists to carry this mission forward.
