Residential Treatment vs Outpatient: What’s the Difference?

Residential Treatment vs Outpatient: What’s the Difference?

If you or someone you love is navigating mental health or autoimmune challenges, you’ve probably come across terms like “residential treatment,” “PHP,” “IOP,” and “outpatient care.” But what do they actually mean? Unless you work in the behavioral health field, it can be incredibly confusing. Many families don’t realize how different these levels of care are or which one is the best fit for their needs.

At Highlands in Bloom (HiB), we believe in demystifying the treatment journey and helping people make informed, empowered choices. So, let’s break it down simply, in a way your grandmother could understand.

What Is Residential Treatment?

Residential treatment (also called RTC or 24-hour care) is a live-in program where individuals receive round-the-clock support in a structured, home-like setting. Clients live on-site full-time, usually for 30 to 90 days or more, depending on their needs.

At Highlands in Bloom, this means staying in a tranquil, six-bed home in Agoura Hills where clients experience:

  • Daily clinical therapy and holistic healing sessions
  • 24/7 support from trained staff
  • Nutritious, therapeutic meals
  • A full schedule that includes somatic movement, mindfulness, and trauma-informed care

Residential treatment is ideal for individuals who need deep healing in a stable environment especially those whose symptoms or life circumstances make it difficult to manage at home or in an outpatient setting.

What Is PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program)?

PHP is a structured day program that typically runs 5 to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week. Clients attend therapy and group sessions during the day but go home at night.

PHP is often used as a step-down from residential care or as a starting point for individuals who don’t require 24/7 support but still need a high level of care. While PHP can be incredibly beneficial, it doesn’t provide the immersive, 24-hour healing environment of residential treatment.

What About IOP and Outpatient?

IOP stands for Intensive Outpatient Program. It usually involves 3 to 4 days per week of group therapy, with each session lasting around 3 hours. Clients live at home, work, and manage their daily responsibilities while receiving part-time support.

Standard outpatient care is even more flexible, often involving weekly therapy sessions or medical check-ins. It can be a helpful form of maintenance or follow-up, but it’s typically not intensive enough to initiate deep healing or regulate severe symptoms.

Detox vs. Residential Treatment

Detox is a medical service designed for individuals who are withdrawing from substances like alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines. It provides short-term stabilization and monitoring, usually for a few days to a week.

While detox is critical for safety, especially in substance use recovery, it is not a full treatment program. Detox helps the body stabilize. Residential treatment helps the whole person heal.

How Highlands in Bloom Fits In

Highlands in Bloom is a residential treatment center (RTC) that specializes in the intersection of mental health and autoimmune challenges. Our six-person, homelike setting is designed for individuals who need more than outpatient therapy can offer — especially those whose nervous system, emotional regulation, or chronic fatigue make it difficult to stabilize without full-time care.

Here’s what makes us different:

  • Trauma-informed care woven into every part of the day
  • Daily 1.5-hour somatic movement blocks
  • Individual, group, and experiential therapies
  • Holistic practices like mindfulness, hydrotherapy, red light, and cold plunge
  • A supportive, community-oriented environment

And yes, residential care is often covered by insurance. We work with families to help navigate coverage and get the support they need.

Which Level of Care Is Right for You?

If you’re unsure which path to take, consider:

  • Have outpatient sessions felt helpful but not enough?
  • Do you feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unable to manage daily life?
  • Are chronic health symptoms affecting your mood, energy, or relationships?
  • Do you need a reset away from your current environment?

If so, residential treatment may be the most supportive next step.

At Highlands in Bloom, we’re here to answer your questions, walk you through the options, and help you find the level of care that fits your healing journey.
